Two of the most common things that I hear from people when I tell them that I am vegan (mind you, I don't just open a conversation with, "Hi, I'm vegan! How are you?") is "Wow, that's amazing!" and it always seems to be followed by, "I could never do that. Veganism is so expensive." At that point, I analyze the person or the surrounding - what they are wearing or the car that they are driving or the $10 Starbucks that they have in their hand (I used to work at Starbucks....and it is not cheap for coffee). I then say to them, "Do you know how much that coffee cost?" They give the astronomical price tag for the cup of beans. I then say, "For that same price, you could purchase produce that could last you 2-3 days and will nourish your body." They always seem baffled or astounded by my response. In that moment of being stunned, I lay this on them: for that cup of coffee that will last you a couple of minutes, you can get the same amount of energy to last you throughout the day via smooth made of bananas (which provide energy), dates and greens! The expression of bafflement becomes one of intrigue. The more we talk, the more they wish to either try it or further explore the possibilities of going vegan.
